Getting Sunscreen Out of Your Eyes

If you have ever witnessed an unfortunate encounter between sunblock and eyes, you know firsthand just how painful it can be. In fact, someone who has experienced a severe case may say that it is a good alternative to carrying around mace or pepper spray. It can take hours before the victim can open his eyes, especially outside in the bright sun.

Needless to say rubbing sunblock in your eyes can ruin a day at the beach instantly. While it is likely that stinging will remain for a while, you should try to treat it as soon as possible.

The best treatment is to immediately flush the eye out with running water for some time. Doing so will flush the sunscreen out of the eye however it probably won't relieve the stinging at once. While it won't help to remove the sunscreen, applying cool, wet compresses to the eyes may have a soothing effect. Applying eye drops such as ClearEyes may assist in cleaning out the eye, but it is likely they will burn.

After rinsing, vision will probably remain blurry for some time. If pain continues after a significant amount of time see your eye doctor.

Tips for Applying Sunblock Safely

  1. Never spray sunscreen straight on the face. Apply first to the hands and rub into the face.

  2. Don't let little children put on sunscreen alone.

  3. Never leave spray lotions in reach of small children.

  4. Rub sunblock in completely.

  5. Be very careful not to apply sunscreen too close to the eyes.

  6. Use large sunglasses to protect the eyes and the areas around them from UV rays.
